Guitar: The Right Tool to Help Your Kid Learn First Chords From an Early Age

· Guitars,Music,Child Guitars

A child's curiosity is never-ending. Imagine the joy and happiness a kid would experience when they get their first guitar.
This could be a life-changing experience. What could start with baby steps, could turn a kid into a worldly famous musician.
A little kid surely can't play the guitar that is made and designed for adults, so if you're planning to get them their first instrument, you should get them a guitar that has the right size. For instance, if you want your child to start as soon as possible, you should start with the smallest size. If your kid was playing with guitar toddler toys, and you can see they have an affinity for the instrument, it's time to seek the real deal.
Once they start taking their lessons and learn their first three accords, no matter how young they are, kids are considered a functioning guitarist.
Learning how to play this instrument would lead to many excellent things such as better focus and concentration, socializing, and better performance at school.

Why Guitar?

If your child shows an interest in playing this instrument, maybe you should consider getting them their first instrument and a guitar teacher.
Many parents wonder what kind of guitar they should get for their kids. If the child does not know this instrument, you can get them a kids guitar, adapted to their small hands and height.
The great thing is that many manufacturers are specially making kids guitars (in all colours) so your kid can develop their interest further.
Also, a kids guitar is made from cheaper materials, so you won't have invested a lot of money (that would be done later if your kid wants to continue playing this instrument).
When it comes to lessons, at least that is not a problem nowadays. You can find guitar teachers anywhere - schools, online, local teachers.
Here are some excellent reasons why the guitar is a superb choice.

Not Too Loud

The gentle sounds of the guitar won't drive you crazy when your kid will start to learn how to play the instrument. It's not a trumpet or a violin, so things will be quite bearable. Once they learn how to play, you can enjoy the lovely melody.

Better Than Gadgets

Focusing on the strings is far a better option than your kid spending hours staring at the screen of their phone, tablet or laptop. Sure, video games and social media are fun, but learning how to play an instrument is an educational thing that is helping the child to sharpen their concentration, memory and works excellent for their mental help.

Easy for Transport

Unlike a piano, a guitar can be taken anywhere the kid wants to go. If they are visiting a music school, they could easily carry their lightweight kids guitar, without the need for adult help. If you're going on a vacation, and your kids want to take it there to play and practice, it is very much possible as well.

Acoustic, Classical or Electric?

In most cases, it's recommended to start with classical guitar for toddler girls and boys who are just starting to learn music. The classical guitar has nylon strings that feel gentle on the fingers (compared to the steel strings of electric and acoustic guitars).
If your kid is older (pre-teen or teen) and they enjoy rock music, then maybe you should go for an electric guitar, so they can learn how to play their favourite melodies.

Acoustic guitars have a similar shape as a classical guitar but have steel strings. The strings give the acoustic guitar a much brighter and louder sound. There is a downside in this, and that is the steel strings that can feel quite sharp, especially to gentle and young skin. Unless your child specifically has an interest in this guitar, maybe they should start with the classical guitar first (at least until their fingertips harden a little bit).

Electric guitars are much smaller than steel-string acoustic guitars and classical guitars which makes them an excellent option for younger students. These guitars, however, are heavier. It's best to wait until the child is at least thirteen years old before they get to play an electric guitar.

Accessories

Once you get your child their guitar, they should ideally start learning right away. However, it's not just the guitar they will need. A beginner will need a strap, a carrying case, extra strings, a tuner. If your kid is getting an electrical guitar, they will need a small amp and cable and headphones so they can practice without disturbing anyone.
A good mentor, however, is the best thing. Besides investing in the right instrument, investing in a good teacher who has patience and knowledge, is the surest way for your kid to learn easily and to actually like their new hobby. And who knows, maybe with time they will truly grow into a successful guitar player who performs around the world.
